The third issue of this fan favorite mini-series starts on an interesting note, as all the jungle mutants descend upon the judges, capturing them so that they might take him back to the insane doctor who no doubt has some horrible designs for these lawmen. That said, there are Predators and even an Alien or so running amuck, so it won’t be a huge surprise if something else gets to the Judges, first.
Here’s the awesome aspect of this third issue: sans a very few pages, this is all out action, we’re talking bloody warfare in relentless bursts. In other words, it is absolutely impossible to be bored by this read. It’s hot rod with the petal to the floor, and damn is it exhilarating.
John Layman’s penchant for violence is glorious to behold, and the fact that he doesn’t lose one critter to the focus of another is an example of excellent writing. And, although I’ve harped for each review, I don’t think I can praise Chris Mooneyham enough. He’s so crisp with his illustrations, totally and completely nailing the Predator, the Alien and especially Judge Dredd, who has never looked like a bigger bad ass in his comic existence.
Dredd finds himself bound, a Xenomorph unleashed by the nutty professor. The plan is, of course, to see one of those nasty face-huggers force a slimy monster down Dredd’s throat. But if you know Dredd, you know the chances of that happening are slim to none. You also know that a massive battle is just on the horizon!
So, you’ve got the full gist of issue three. The book looks every bit as amazing as its predecessor, and, well, dare I say it: I think this is the best issue of the run thus far!
Score yet another smash hit for Dark Horse Comics!
